Explaining the difference: porcelain vs. ceramic tile

We always hear this question in the Carpet Unlimited showroom: "Which is better, porcelain or ceramic?" Of course, both are great for tile floors, but they all have various strength and porosity levels that determine where and how you should use these pieces.

Porcelain: Floor tile for busy rooms

Porcelain is made of clay, sand, and glass, resulting in a heavier, denser tile. It's also fired at higher temperatures, making it even more durable and best for busy areas like kitchens, baths, hallways, and outside on the patio, deck, and pool floors. No worries because porcelain can stand up to any weather condition.

This large-format tile ranges in size from the typical 12" X 12" and up, with some manufacturers even making them as large as 48" X 48." This is aligned with the current trend toward big tiles, and the large format and fewer seams often make it the preferred choice for wool look planks or tile. Porcelain's high-end design also makes it a popular choice for walls, and tub/shower surrounds.

Types of ceramic tiles

You'll see an unlimited number of designs, shapes, sizes in our tile shop, but keep in mind that not all ceramics are the same, with some being better for floors or walls, as well as countertops backsplashes, and tub/shower surrounds.

Types of ceramics include the highly designed, glazed squares that we often see on backsplashes, accent walls, tub and shower surrounds, countertops, and moderately busy indoor floors. Mosaics are the tiny but durable mold and mildew pieces that are so popular for bathroom floors. Highly durable terracotta bricks can be used indoors or out and are porous, so ask about sealing. Finally, subway tiles can be used on indoor, low-traffic floors such as bedrooms.
